Implementation of on-line order entry for Hemodialysis Unit at the
Queens Health Network which includes both Elmhurst and Queens Hospitals |
|
July 2006: In an effort to
improve the care delivery process, provider workflows and
communications, Negley, Ott & Associates,
Inc.'s Cynthia Herold, MT (ASCP) and Dar Sabatino, RN, as
well as the Queen's Health Network (QHN)
HIS project team successfully designed and deployed on-line order entry
for the Hemodialysis Unit patient population. Prior to July 2006,
orders for Hemodialysis patients were managed on paper. That
process has historically been a challenge due to the chronically ill
nature of the patient population. It also consistently posed
difficulties handling future lab tests, ancillary exams and medications.
The improved communication between the provider and ancillary
departments, including the pharmacy, is a direct result of the
electronic transmission of newly entered orders and is one of the most
significant improvements resulting from this project initiative.
The orders are a permanent part of the patients’ electronic record
making retrieval and processing more efficient, timely and safe.
The benefits derived for patient safety can be attributed to automated
drug allergy checking, drug-to-drug interaction checking and dose
checking.
Congratulations to New York City Health and Hospital Corporation,
Queens Health Network, the HIS team
and NOA's consultants for a successful deployment! This deployment
is another example of how NYCHHC continues to demonstrate quality and
excellence towards community health by using the Misys CPR™ / Misys
CPOE™ integrated electronic health record.

About Negley, Ott &
Associates, Inc. |
| NOA was formed in 1992 by
IS professionals with a desire to provide hospital information system
and clinical professionals with best demonstrated practices in
conjunction with implementing clinical software systems that focus on
patient care. The issues, personalities, opportunities, challenges and
solutions required by clinical system implementations require the
ability to meld sensitivity to clinical processes with the realities of
computing and patient care delivery. To date, NOA has provided services
to over 60 hospitals installing clinical systems using an approach that
stresses both outcomes and knowledge transfer. Supporting so many users,
both during and after their installation, gives NOA the opportunity to
understand the issues that make clinical systems work, and those that
don't. |
