January 2004:

The Central Brooklyn Family Health Network (CBFHN) Converts to Misys-CPR/CPOESystem

NOA consultant, Pelvia Woods, RN, recently completed a project to convert The Central Brooklyn Family Health Network (CBFHN) to the newest software version of the Misys-CPR/CPOE™ system, formerly known as Patient1® / Vista.  CBFHN is part of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (NYCHHC) and consists of the following facilities:

  • Kings County Hospital Center

  • Dr. Susan Smith McKinney Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center

  • East New York Diagnostic & Treatment Center

  • Flatbush Avenue Health Center

  • Bedford-Stuyvesant Alcoholic & Treatment Center

  • 6 satellite Family Health Clinics

Pelvia's consultation efforts were part of a team approach utilized at CBFHN.  The team was comprised of NOA, Misys and Kings County Hospital personnel.  The go-live included a new order entry GUI with redesigned desktops and order sets for multiple medical specialties.  The project also included development of the new Vista GUI clinical desktops for physicians, nursing and lab personnel.

  • Physician Desktops - included four variations of physician desktops which were designed for CBHN to accommodate the more than 3000 physicians, residents, medical students, nurse practitioners and nurse midwives in 11 facilities.

  • Nursing Desktops - included seven variations of nursing desktops which were designed to accommodate the inpatient, outpatient (clinic), emergency and psychiatry nursing requirements in 11 facilities.

  • Lab Desktops - included nine variations of lab desktops and were designed to accommodate the multiple lab departments as well as remote access to the lab functions from two other HHC facilities who are utilizing  CBHN as a reference lab.

  • Online Medication Administration - a pilot for on-line medication administration was implemented which utilizes wireless PC’s on medication carts.  CBFHN has one of the largest and busiest medical units within the network.

  • Clinical Desktops (Vista) in Radiology, Laboratory, Cardiology, Neurology, Audiology, Pharmacy, Respiratory/Pulmonary, Nutrition, Infection Control, Medical Records, Registration, Utilization/Quality Management/Risk Management, Employee Health, Social Services and Emergency, as well as all inpatient units and clinics at all facilities in the network.

Congratulations to The Central Brooklyn Family Health Network, Misys, NOA's Pelvia Woods and the other team members for a successful deployment!  This deployment is another example of how NYCHHC continues to demonstrate quality and excellence towards community health by using the Patient1® / Misys CPR™ / Misys CPOE™ integrated electronic health record.

About Negley, Ott & Associates, Inc.
NOA was formed in 1992 by IS professionals with a desire to provide hospital information system and clinical professionals with best demonstrated practices in conjunction with implementing clinical software systems that focus on patient care. The issues, personalities, opportunities, challenges and solutions required by clinical system implementations require the ability to meld sensitivity to clinical processes with the realities of computing and patient care delivery. To date, NOA has provided services to over 40 hospitals installing clinical systems using an approach that stresses both outcomes and knowledge transfer. Supporting so many users, both during and after their installation, gives NOA the opportunity to understand the issues that make clinical systems work, and those that don't.
