Queens Health Network began their initial inpatient nursing implementation GO LIVE on Monday, May 5,2003. The implementation included on-line nursing staff assignment, electronic sign-off of provider orders and documentation of admission height, weight, allergies and 24 hour nursing order review.

The network used a phased approach over a two-week period starting first with the medical-surgical units at both Elmhurst Hospital Center and Queens Hospital Center.  This first phase included the admitted patients still in the Emergency department waiting on an inpatient bed.  Once these units were on-line, the maternal/child units were brought up followed by the psychiatric units.

As part of the implementation at these facilities, the system now generates a MAR (Medication Administration Record) label.  This enhancement produces the following improvements:

  1. Clerical error elimination: Previously the orders were manually transcribed on the MAR creating the possibility of clerical errors.

  2. Safer and more efficient administration:  The order must be reviewed and approved by the pharmacy prior to administration, which is a safer and more efficient approach.

  3. Increased patient safety:  The new electronic process prints the MAR label on the patient's nursing unit after the order is reviewed and approved by the pharmacy.

Congratulations to the Queens Health Network for another successful go live and continuing to demonstrate quality and excellence towards community health by using the Ulticare® / Patient1® / Vista / Misys CPR™ / Misys CPOE™ system  as an integrated electronic health record!
