April, 2002:
Negley, Ott & Associates, Inc.
implemented ON-LINE
PHYSICIAN ORDER ENTRY at New York City
Health & Hospitals Corporation (Elmhurst Hospital Center).
Elmhurst
Hospital Center is a 525 bed acute care facility in Queens,
New York. They have been using the UltiCare® / Patient1®
(Misys CPR™
/ Misys CPOE™)
system in the outpatient clinics for over four years. On Sunday, April
7, Negley, Ott & Associates,
Inc. (NOA) brought the hospital live for on-line Physician
Order Entry for all of their inpatient units.
This initiative involved approximately
800 physicians, residents, nurse midwives, nurse practitioners and
physician attendants. Some of the key reasons for implementing this
functionality were the following:
- Legibility &
Patient Safety
- Availability of
information
- Order Entry alerts
As a result of the successful
implementation of the on-line entry of physician orders, the following
benefits have been realized:
- The system
automatically sends notification to the ancillary
departments regarding the tests to be performed.
- The order is
clear and legible and is transmitted real time to the
nursing staff as well as the ancillary areas.
- There is
improved patient safety as a result of the built in alerts
for adverse drug reactions, drug to drug interactions and dose range
checking that present during order entry.
- Duplicate
procedures are eliminated as a result of alerts indicating
duplicate procedures.
- Providers can enter
orders for inpatients from any hospital
location eliminating the need to write orders on various
forms. Consequently, this reduces the need to deliver
requisitions to the patient nursing units.
